‘Reimagining’ Arrowhead: Fans share renovation dreams, including roof

28 February 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — Renovation plans at Arrowhead Stadium are currently a mystery to the public, but on Wednesday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs will announce their vision for the future and likely share renderings of what they want for the stadium.

How far those plans will go? It’s hard to say at this point.

One of the bigger questions is (and admittedly contingent on a lot of other things) what are the plans for Kauffman Stadium when or if the Kansas City Royals leave it behind. It is possible that the topic will not even be in the scope of Wednesday’s discussion.

But among fans, there’s no shortage of ideas for the Truman Sports Complex.

“Oh gosh, maybe some more restaurants would be really cool,” one woman said, considering the situation.

“Well, I’d like to see more activities for the kids. More activities for the grown-ups, man,” Cendy Herdia Perez-Cruz said.

“Some stadiums have a big sun-thing. Maybe the Chiefs putting one of those up,” Hailey Taylor said.

“Rolling roof. You know, more protection from the elements. And since we’ve won three Super Bowls, I think we can afford renovations on that stadium and upgrades like all the other stadiums have been doing,” Emanuel Holder said.

A roof is an idea that’s been kicked around, even well before a failed 2006 ballot question pitching a $170 million movable canopy that would alternate between Arrowhead and The K.

In the more recent history, ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, team owner Clark Hunt expressed his preference: no roof.

It is a somewhat divisive topic among fans.

“I don’t think we should do a roof. I like playing in the elements. I think the Chiefs play really well in the elements,” one fan said.

“I know we know how to play in the weather, but I think a roof would be great to keep us warm and to keep it cool in the summer,” Taylor said. “Because sometimes you go to summer games or summer events or summer concerts, and it gets really hot out there at Arrowhead.”

“Hey man, but we go to other stadiums, and we play, and we ain’t got to worry about the rain, the mud. It ain’t the 70s like it used to be, you know?” Holder said.

Other possibilities: additional seating in new layouts, large screen and speaker system upgrades, and changes befitting a new generation of fans more accustomed to winning.

“Her first year born, she got to see a Super Bowl win,” one fan said with her baby daughter.

So it’s all speculation at this point, with details expected to come into focus at Wednesday’s 10 a.m. news conference.

There’s also this question that’s very likely to be asked of the Chiefs during the Q&A: How do they expect the renovations will be paid for?
