Red flag warning in Shawnee County today

27 February 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The National Weather Service of Topeka is issuing a Red Flag Warning for Shawnee County.

A red flag warning means fire conditions are critical. A combination of warm temperatures, strong winds and low humidity increases fire risks.

Shawnee County will see wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph and southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph. Mid to late this afternoon, wind gusts could reach 40 mph and have northwest winds up to 30 mph.

Outdoor burning isn’t recommended due to the risk of fire.

Yesterday, Governor Laura Kelly gave a verbal declaration of the disaster emergency at 10:23 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 26 in light of weather conditions that could create the potential for wildfires this week. The declaration allows more resources to be available for fighting wildfires.
