TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says a brand of electric bikes are being recalled nationally due to the possibility they may catch on fire.
The CPSC announced online that around 1,700 Ascend Cabrillo and Minaret Electric Bikes are being recalled as the lithium-ion batteries on the bikes were not assembled properly. This has created a risk of overheating and fire while the bikes are charging. The manufacturer of the bikes said it has received three reports of the battery catching on fire with one person receiving second-degree burns.
The Ascend Cabrillo model numbers included in the recall include R7583BPS and R7585BPS along with the Ascend Minaret model number R7586BPS. This number is found printed on the service label on the seat tube above the bottom bracket.
The CPSC said the Ascend Cabrillo was sold in a sand or gray color and bears a rear storage rack. The Minaret was sold in black with red and gray accents or a step-through frame style. The word “Ascend” can be found on the downtube while the word “Cabrillo” or “Minaret” can be found on the chain stay. These electric bikes have electric assist motors.
If you bought one of the recalled bikes, you are encouraged to stop using them and unplug them immediately. Consumers are encouraged to enter the serial number for their bikes online using this link to confirm it is part of the recall.
The CPSC said the bikes were sold at Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s stores nationwide, including in Kansas. People can return the bikes to the place of purchase for a full refund.
