MANHATTAN, Kan. (KSNT) — A false call to 911 led a police officer to shoot a dog.
Riley County Police say it happened around 4 a.m. Monday in northwest Manhattan. Police responded to a report of an aggressive dog that had bitten a child.
The department says an officer shot the dog after it “exhibited aggressive behavior towards one of our officers.” Animal Control responded and transported the dog to Kansas State University Veterinary Services for treatment.
As police investigated, they learned that the person who had reported that the dog had bit the child was under the influence, and the incident had actually happened last year. The child was unharmed inside of the home.
An RCPD officer shot the dog, injuring it. Local animal control staff attended to the animal and took it to Kansas State University Veterinary Services for treatment, according to the press release.
A follow-up investigation found the person who made the report was under the influence and the alleged dog bite incident had happened a year prior. The child was later confirmed to be safe inside a home.
“We are pleased to report that the dog is currently receiving medical care and is expected to recover from its injuries,” says the department in a press release. “This incident was part of a domestic violence situation. As such, we are refraining from disclosing further details at this time. We assure the public that we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including our valued animal companions.”
