Police respond to highway crash in west Topeka, traffic backed up

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Police and other emergency responders are responding to a report of a crash on I-470 in west Topeka on Friday.

Shawnee County Emergency Dispatch confirms first responders were notified of a crash at 3:08 p.m. on Jan. 26 for a crash just south of I-470 and Southwest 21st Street in Topeka.

Rosie Nichols with the City of Topeka said in a press release that officers with the Topeka Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol along with the Topeka Fire Department are at the scene of the crash which involves multiple vehicles on westbound I-470 between the SW 21st Street and SW 29th Street exits. Westbound I-470 is closed at this time at SW 29th Street and Fairlawn Road. Eastbound I-470 is down to one lane from the SW 21st Street and SW 29th Street exits.

Nichols said the TPD is asking people to avoid the area and find alternate routes at this time.

Traffic cameras on kandrive.gov show traffic backed up the westbound lanes to 29th Street. More information will be added here as it becomes available.
