TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Special Olympics of Kansas is hosting Polar Plunge events in eight cities across the state this February.
With all but one concluded, they’ve raised more than $135,000 so far.
KSNT 27 News spoke to a Topeka participant, Jared Rowley, as he exited a frigid Lake Shawnee on Saturday, Feb. 17. Rowley is the student resource officer at Robinson Middle School. He says he got a push from students to give the cold plunge a try.
“A lot of the kids at Robinson Middle School were talking about it and they kind of dared me to do it,” Rowley said. “I said ‘hey, if we raise enough money, I’ll jump in!’ It’s for a good cause – the Special Olympics. I’ve been doing the track and field and basketball with them for a while. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s awesome.”
The final Polar Plunge event will take place Feb. 24 in Hutchinson.
