WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A roadside construction worker was killed, and two others were critically injured in a crash in Kay County, Oklahoma, Monday morning.
According to Kay County Emergency Management Director Daniel Hesson, the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. on Interstate 35 just south of the Blackwell Tonkawa Municipal Airport.
Hesson says a man from out of state was driving a Dodge Avenger south on Interstate 35. With him were three juvenile passengers, also from out of state.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol suspects the driver fell asleep when he went up the side of a bridge and hit the three roadside construction workers, all of whom were from out of state working for Wildcat Construction.
One of the construction workers was instantly killed, according to the OHP. The other two were flown to Wichita in critical condition, where one remains in extremely critical condition, according to Hesson.
Everyone in the car had mild to no injuries. The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with the OHP.
Southbound I-35 was temporarily closed but has since reopened.
“This is yet another reminder to stay alert and watch for vehicles and/or workers on the side of the road,” said the OHP. “Our traffic homicide unit is investigating and will present the facts to the Kay Co. D.A. when complete.”
The victim has not been identified at this time. KSN will provide more information as it becomes available.
