MAYETTA (KSNT) – Local officials with a Kansas Native American broke ground on a new environmentally-friendly business near Mayetta.

Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation announced online that Tribal Council members joined forces with officials associated with Prairie Band LLC and Gaia Eco to turn some dirt at a development site near Mayetta. The ceremony is a “significant milestone” as it heralds the arrival of the first business to be operational at the site.

The newcomer to the area, Gaia Eco, specializes in manufacturing everyday use items like biodegradable paper cups, lids and straws. The Brazil-based company’s products are completely biodegradable and “ecologically correct,” according to its website.

“Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s partnership with Gaia Eco plays a pivotal role in the Nation’s economic development efforts while also leading in the development of new ways to create sustainable products with a negative carbon footprint.”
