KBI investigating a fatal shooting near Larned; suspect arrested

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A mother has been charged for allegedly shooting her son in south Wichita on March 27.
According to court documents, 40-year-old Alvina Horner is being charged with aggravated battery; reckless deadly weapon cause great bodily harm/disfigurement/death.
Horner is being held on a $250,000 bond. She is scheduled to be back in court on April 15.
According to the Wichita Police Department, just before midnight, officers were dispatched to the report of a shooting at Industrial Street and South Hydraulic Avenue.
Wichita police say a 10-year-old boy called to report he had been shot.
Within a minute of the call, a deputy with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a car heading north on Interstate 135 and Kansas Highway 15. It was being driven by Horner. Her son, the 10-year-old caller, was in the passenger seat, suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg.
The deputy called for assistance, leading to additional officers and Sedgwick County EMS responding to the scene. The boy was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the WPD, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded firearm under the driver’s seat.
Horner was taken to police headquarters for further investigation. Detectives with the Exploited and Missing Child Unit interviewed Horner’s hospitalized son.
Horner was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on one felony count of aggravated
battery; reckless deadly weapon cause great bodily harm and one felony count of
aggravated endangering a child.
