12 March 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – McConnell Air Force Base plans to conduct controlled burns between March 13 and March 24.

The burns are subject to weather, most notably both wind speed and wind direction and are being conducted to remove excess vegetation.

The areas are mostly along the south and southeastern sections of the base, except for one area by the West Gate.

Specific locations are as follows:

A small section of Air Force property at the base’s southernmost-border, south of East 47th Street South, and east of South Oliver Street

Two areas north of the Udall Road and Liberal Road intersection, which is near a fire training area used by McConnell firefighters

Remote wetlands along the southeast corner of McConnell

A grassy area just south of McConnell’s West Gate and along George Washington Boulevard, near the Kansas Air National Guard Air Park.

The 22nd Air Refueling Wing Safety Office, McConnell AFB Fire Department, and Airfield Management will be working together and will be on each site to quickly and safely control each burn. The burns are being conducted by the Air Force Wildland Center, and a burn permit has been issued by the Sedgwick County Fire Marshall Office.
