WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man was in court on March 1 where he pleaded guilty to shooting at a car before it crashed, leaving two people dead.
Javion Wimbley pleaded guilty to the following crimes:
Two counts of voluntary manslaughter
One count of aggravated battery
One count of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon
One count of criminal discharge of a firearm
The incident happened on Feb. 21, 2022 near the intersection of Lincoln and George Washington in south Wichita.
Police at the time said someone was shooting at a car that ended up crashing, but court documents show none of the bullets hit the three people in the car.
Two of the people in the car died — 21-year-old Amill Williams and 20-year-old Alonzo Montgomery, Wichita. A 22-year-old woman was ejected from the car, she was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Court documents show Williams and Montgomery both died from blunt force trauma due to the car crash. The vehicle’s event data recorder showed the vehicle was traveling 83 miles per hour when it collided with a tree.
An investigation at the scene found evidence of a shooting in the area. Police said their investigation revealed that the car’s three occupants were being followed by an unknown vehicle. People in the unknown vehicle began firing shots at them.
In total, police found the casings were fired from four different firearms. Wimbley is one of four suspects involved the case.
Wimbley also pleaded guilty to one count of criminal in possession of a weapon by a felon for an unrelated case. He is set to be sentenced on April 11.
