TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office reports that a man has been found guilty in connection to a 2017 shooting in central Topeka and other crimes.
Jihad Anwar Keys was found guilty of 11 counts, according to the DA’s office. Keys was arrested and charged in connection to a series of crimes running from 2017 to 2019, including the 2017 killing of Matthew Lowry. These include:
Two counts of aggravated battery
Aggravated assault
Criminal possession of a firearm
Attempted murder in the second degree
Attempted aggravated robbery
Two counts of murder in the first degree
Murder in the second degree
Felon in possession of a firearm
Aggravated robbery
On April 23, 2017, police responded to the 1500 block of SW 15th Street due to a report of a shooting, according to the DA’s office. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Lowry and Steven Ferris in the parking lot, both with gunshot injuries. Lowry later died from his injuries with Ferris telling police he and Lowry were being robbed when the shooting happened.
On April 28, 2017, police were called to the Mexican Taco Shop on SW 10th Avenue regarding a robbery. Law enforcement later learned that masked and armed assailants entered the store and robbed it before leaving.
On July 13, 2019, police were called to the 1500 block of SW 16th Street regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, police found Keyton Hill suffering from several gunshot injuries. He was taken to a local hospital where he received medial aid. He told police he was assaulted at the backdoor of his home when he was shot.
Keys will have a sentencing hearing on Friday, April 5, 2024.
