Mahomes, Jackson become first Black starting QBs to face off in AFC Championship

22 January 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — Black quarterbacks in the NFL continue to break barriers and make history and will set another milestone when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson will be the first Black QBs to ever start against each other in the AFC Championship and the second time.

It is also the second conference championship game in NFL history with two Black starting QBs. The first was the 2005 NFC Championship game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia which featured Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb.

Last season, Mahomes and Jalen Hurts made history, being the first Black starting quarterbacks to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

It’s quite fitting the two are facing off with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, considering Mahomes won his second MVP last season, and Jackson is presumably set to win his second this season.

Mahomes has also reached the AFC Championship game every year since he’s been a starter in Kansas City.

The two have very decorated careers in such a short amount of time and have been the standard of QB play recently.
