LAWRENCE, Kan. — Lawrence police say a woman found dead in a tent in an unsanctioned camp near the banks of the Kansas River was the victim of a homicide.
Police say the woman was found dead around 4:30 on Thursday morning near 100 Maple. A release doesn’t describe how she died or whether police know of a suspect or have anyone in custody yet.
The police department says it will issue more information when it’s able.
The area where the woman was found has been in the news over the past few months with the city demanding people living in the unsanctioned camp move at least 15 feet away from the levee along the Kansas River.
Late last year, the sanctioned homeless camp triggered a lawsuit from nearby business owners, accusing the city of mismanaging it.
