KHP initiative to enforce seatbelts near schools

23 February 2024

KANSAS (KSNT) – The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) will be joining neighboring state law enforcement agencies to enforce a two-week Seatbelts are for Everyone (SAFE) program.

The KHP will join departments from Missouri and Oklahoma in the initiative. The program will go on for two weeks from Feb. 26 to March 8, according to the KHP.

Law enforcement will be focusing on drivers not wearing seatbelts around high schools. During this time, troopers will be “extra vigilant”. The KHP reminds teens that driving is a privilege and encourages them to learn about driving safety.

“Seatbelts have been proven to save lives and prevent injuries,” KHP Superintendent Colonel Erik Smith said. “It is our goal to make sure all citizens of Kansas buckle up in all seating positions. Please slow down and put distractions away. Safe driving behaviors can help to prevent crashes on Kansas roadways.”
