KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — The Kansas City Chiefs have some crucial decisions to make in the 2024 offseason.
The contract discussions between the Chiefs and defensive tackle Chris Jones ruled last year’s offseason and that will repeat this offseason.
Jones is set to be a free agent but the Chiefs could franchise tag him for the price of $32 million.
Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed is also set to be a free agent and his franchise tag would be around $18 million.
These two big free agents along with several other defensive free agents will make for another interesting offseason for the back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
Here are some key offseason dates to watch for.
Feb. 20: First day to designate franchise and transition tags – The transition tag is a one-year offer for the average of the top 10 salaries at the position — as opposed to the top five for the franchise tag.
It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player might receive from another club. Jones and Sneed are the Chiefs who would likely see either of these tags.
Feb. 26-March 4: Scouting combine in Indianapolis – Kansas State and Missouri have a number of prospects. Live drills will take place from Feb.29-March 4.
March 5 (3 p.m. CT): Franchise/transition tag deadline
March 11-13: Negotiating period for pending unrestricted free agents
March 13 (3 p.m. CT): Free agent deals can be signed, trades can be officially consummated, June 1 cuts can be designated and the deadline for qualifying offers to restricted free agents.
March 24-27: Annual league meeting in Orlando, Florida
April 1: Teams with new head coaches can begin offseason conditioning programs
April 15: Remaining teams can begin offseason conditioning programs
April 19: Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets
April 25-27: NFL draft in Detroit – The Chiefs have these picks so far in the 2024 NFL Draft:
Round 1, pick 32
Round 2, pick 64
Round 3, pick 95
Round 4, pick 133
Round 5, pick 158
Round 5, pick 172
May 2: Deadline for teams to pick up fifth-year options for 2021 draft class
May 3-6 or May 10-13: Teams can stage rookie minicamps
May/June: Teams can stage OTAs and mandatory minicamp
