TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Department of Transportation has selected 12 Kansas communities to receive grant funds to help develop the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project.
The SRTS program accepted two types of grant applications: planning grants and kick-start grants.
Planning grants are awarded to develop SRTS plans to study conditions, for public outreach and find infrastructure solutions to get students to school safely. Kick-start grants were awarded in support of programs, events or projects that will develop SRTS in the future. Each grantee will be awarded up to $1,500, according to KDOT.
Some examples of Kick Start projects are:
Creation of promotional materials.
Making bicycling and pedestrian safety education materials.
Training workshops for school and community members.
Data collection and analysis for local projects.
Increasing law enforcement presence or for funding enforcement equipment at schools.
Purchasing supplies for demonstration projects.
Traffic gardens.
The cities of Belle Plaine, Emporia, Holton, Parsons and Rossville were awarded planning grant funds. The cities of Dighton, Johnson City, Mission, Moundridge, Saint George, Topeka and Wichita were awarded kick-start grant funds.
