KDOT crews to close lanes on Highway 24 in Topeka for road work

12 April 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – State transportation officials say they will start closing parts of U.S. Highway 24 in Topeka soon for a reconstruction project.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced in a press release Friday, April 12 that work crews will be taking Hwy 24 down to one lane from Goldwater Road to Topeka Boulevard. This is slated to start on Monday, April 15 in the westbound lanes with the eastbound lanes receiving the same treatment in the middle of the week.

KDOT spokeswoman Kate Craft says the south tie-in of the Kansas Avenue intersection will close at Hwy 24 on Monday, April 22. The north tie-in will close on Monday, April 29. Drivers can follow detours on Topeka Boulevard or other routes.

Traffic changes will let work crews build temporary roadways, known as shoo-flies, between the highway and nearby frontage roads. These shoo-flies will be complete in May to shift traffic onto the frontage roads while the Hwy 24 reconstruction is underway. This phase of the project is expected to be finished by December 2024.
