Kansas school district postpones 4-day school week

20 March 2024

NICKERSON, Kan. (KSNW) — A Reno County school district has changed its mind about pursuing a four-day school week, at least for now.

USD 309 Nickerson/South Hutchinson Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said going from five days to four days a week next school year would have saved money and would have been an incentive to lure people to the district.

Many parents did not like the idea. Some were worried about finding child care for the fifth day, and others were concerned that students already miss a lot of education on scheduled days off.

Nightingale said the USD 309 Board of Education decided to table the topic until at least 2026.

“The main reason was the level of support within the community when compared to the potential negative impact on many of our families did not make it a feasible change to make right now,” he told KSN News.
