Kansas lawmaker arrested in Shawnee County

5 March 2024

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – A state representative was arrested in Shawnee County on Monday.

Fifty-two-year-old Carl Fredrick Alexander Maughan, a Colwich Republican who represents District 90, was booked on suspicion of possession of a firearm while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to give a signal when changing lanes or turning and improper driving on a landed roadway, according to the Shawnee County daily booking report.

Maughan won the general election on Nov. 8, 2022. District 90 includes a large portion of Sedgwick County and includes parts of Wichita.

Maughan is assigned to the Corrections and Juvenile Justice Committee, Financial Institutions and Pensions Committee, House Judiciary Committee, Rules and Journal Committee and the Special Claims Against the State Committee.

Quiet Tuesday before unsettled weather returns

Maughan bonded out and was released after being detained for 10 and a half hours, according to the daily booking report.

KSN does not typically name individuals until they are charged with a crime. Because Maughan is an elected official serving during an active session in Topeka, we determined his arrest is of public interest to his constituents here in Sedgwick County.
