Kansas law firm offers free help to those with criminal, drug history in Topeka

19 March 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Kansas law firm is helping locals struggling to find housing and employment.

Kansas Legal Services is hosting clinics to help people struggling with past criminal and drug offenses to get back on their feet by offering free legal aid. 27 News spoke with organizers for an event hosted by Kansas Legal Services on Tuesday, March 19 who say the work makes a positive difference in the lives of those they help and their communities.

“And there’s also an impact on people’s ability to get jobs sometimes if you’ve got something on your record that would prevent employment,” said Executive Director of Topeka Independent Living Resource Center Ami Hyten. “You know economic self-sufficiency and dignity – those are both really important to people.”

Kansas Legal services hosts events similar to this one throughout the state and is always looking for more volunteers to help.

“We love to have other attorneys – private attorneys – volunteer and assist us,” said Pro Bono Director Joy Springfield with Kansas Legal Services. “And doing these expungement clinics or driver’s license clinics, it’s not a lot of time commitment. So, if you’re interested, contact me!”
