Kansas Humane Society provides update after demanding change

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Humane Society provided an update Wednesday evening after demanding change after the Kansas Department of Agriculture cited one of their partners for taking sick animals from them.

The KHS first thanked everyone for their support.

“We have received clarification from the Kansas Department of Agriculture regarding sending animals with contagious or infectious disease to foster, which is still officially allowed!” said the KHS in a Facebook post. “Thank you to all of our fosters, especially those that open your homes to sick animals.”

The KHS said they met with the Kansas Pet Advisory Board in Topeka on Wednesday.

“Our CEO & President, Aaron Walker, provided comments regarding our concerns and had several partners (consisting of shelters, rescues, a The Humane Society of the United States representative, and an animal control officer) show up to lend their voices regarding the ambiguity of the law that was cited this week (KSA 47-624) and their support of our concerns,” said the KHS.

They say as of Wednesday evening they are reviewing their foster and reduce placement practices to ensure they are operating within the recent clarification they received.

“Currently, we are still unable to place sick animals with contagious or infectious diseases in rescue or shelter placement until we revise our process and ensure our partners are willing to follow these new requirements outlined by the Kansas Department of Agriculture,” said the KHS.

The KHS will provide updates as they receive further clarification. Like the “Kansas Humane Society” on Facebook for the latest.
