TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas’ governor is asking President Joe Biden for help in recovering after severe winter weather earlier this year.
The Adjutant General’s Department announced in a press release that Governor Laura Kelly is requesting a major federal disaster declaration for the state of Kansas. This is due to the damage caused in several Kansas counties due to a winter storm system from Jan. 8-16 in 2024.
“In January, many Kansas counties were impacted by the winter storm system that moved across the state,” Kelly said. “I am requesting this disaster declaration to ensure our counties have the resources they need to repair the damages caused by these storms and get things back to normal for these Kansas communities.”
Kelly’s request to Biden is through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This includes a request for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program statewide and for the Public Assistance Program (Category A – G) for the following counties:
Butler
Chase
Cloud
Edwards
Ford
Geary
Gray
Hodgeman
Morris
Osage
Ottawa
Pawnee
Shawnee
Stafford
Trego
Wabaunsee
