Kansas given more time to file federal disaster declaration

16 February 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The State of Kansas was granted an extension to request a major federal disaster declaration for the storm that hit the state from Jan. 7-16 earlier this year.

A letter from Feb. 7 to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requested an extension to April 15, 2024. The extension was made to provide more time to make damage assessments and to get federal assistance from the Public Assistance Program.

“We are grateful for this extension to file our request,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “The additional time will allow personnel from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to gather all the necessary information to corroborate the incident period and the damages caused by the storms.”
