KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — It was bound to happen, a red and white wedding on Valentine’s Day. One Kansas City couple plans to say “I do” surrounded by Chiefs Kingdom.
FOX4 talked with the bride and groom scrambling to make their wedding day go off without a hitch.
While the Chiefs get their Super Bowl rings, one Kansas City couple is planning to exchange vows and rings of their own at the victory parade.
“Getting married in front of a million people,” Sami Swanger said.
Swanger and Bob Wheeles originally had a small wedding in mind.
They got the marriage license and planned to make it official at the courthouse on Valentine’s Day.
Then, the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl and won the Lombardi Trophy. The couple quickly called an audible – noting the day of the victory parade was their chosen wedding day.
“And I’m like, well, we’re supposed to get married that day, and he’s like, we’ve got to go to the parade, and I’m like, let’s just get married at the parade,” Swanger said. “And everything just snowballed, and I started planning my whole wedding in two weeks.”
“I never thought she’d go for the idea,” Wheeles said.
The love of his life was all for it. Wheeles bought a red jacket from rally house, and Swanger said she overnighted a red, bedazzled Chiefs dress.
“I do have white leggings, so I’ve got a little white, and I have a veil, but I had to rep the Chiefs,” Swanger said.
The couple scored – finding an available officiant online. Everyone invited is asked to match the bride and groom’s energy – representing the Chiefs.
“We’re just going to just be totally decked out. all of our friends and family that are coming are coming decked out and our officiant, as well,” Swanger said.”We’re just going to have a lot
of fun with it and we’re just so excited to be celebrated with the entire Chiefs kingdom.”
The wedding will happen Wednesday morning near Union Station, and the reception – well, that will be the rally.
“We’re just going to have a big ole party,” Swanger said, “the biggest reception ever.”
The victory parade starts at 11 a.m. and heads to Union Station. A rally in front of Union Station is expected to begin around 12:45 p.m. Then, the lover birds are back to work Thursday.
