KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The most decorated coordinator in NFL history isn’t going anywhere.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced right before the start of the Super Bowl parade on Wednesday that they’ve extended defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
The terms of the new deal weren’t immediately released.
Spagnuolo’s side shined brightest in the 2023 season, flipping the script from years’ past where the offense led the charge. The Chiefs were second in total defense, their best mark in his five years leading the unit, playing particularly well in the secondary where they were fourth in passing yards and touchdowns allowed.
He’s the first coordinator in NFL history to win four Super Bowls, claiming three with the Chiefs in the last five years, and one with the New York Giants in 2008.
He’s a beloved figure among his players, inspiring Justin Reid to create a line of shirts that say, “In Spags We Trust.”
“We just have full trust and belief in what coach Spags puts together no matter what happens. Even if they score, say a touchdown on the first drive, we’re going to live and die by the game plan because we know it’s going to work,” Reid told FOX4 after the Chiefs beat Baltimore for the AFC Championship.
The Chiefs celebrate their success with a parade and rally on Wednesday, then turn their attention to work on becoming the first team in NFL history to repeat as Super Bowl champions in three-consecutive seasons.
