TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Kansas Representative Carl Maughan is speaking out for the first time following his arrest.
Maughan sent the following statement to Nexstar’s Kansas Capitol Bureau Tuesday evening, regarding his arrest.
“On March 3, 2024, I exercised poor judgment, and I was arrested in Topeka. This conduct presented a poor example to my family, my constituents, and the citizens of the state of Kansas. They deserve better and I am committed to doing better. I made a grave error in judgment and apologize and accept responsibility for my actions. I look forward to learning from this error in judgment, and becoming a better person as a result.”
Rep. Carl Maughan, (R-Colwich)
Maughan also stated that his attorney has asked him not to make any further comments at this time.
Maughan stepped down from his Vice-Chair position on the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
On Monday, the 52-year-old Colwich Republican was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on charges of possession of a firearm while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to give signal when changing lanes or turning, and improper driving on a laned roadway, according to the Shawnee County daily booking report.
