KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — There are two questions on the mind of just about every Kansas City Chiefs fan. How much does it cost to go to the Super Bowl, and can I swing it?
From Kansas City to Las Vegas, it’s about a 20-hour drive. So that’s why most people will choose to fly, and airlines are responding.
Justin Meyer is with the Kansas City International Airport. He said they usually see five non-stop flights to Vegas on a Friday. Since the Chiefs are headed to the Super Bowl, that number has now jumped to 15.
“Right after the game, we saw airlines adding capacity,” Meyer said. “Last year to Phoenix, it about doubled. This year to Las Vegas, it’s going to triple.”
Meyer said they expect to see 20 inbound flights from Vegas.
Mark Ebbitts is president of Shelton Travel in Kansas City. He said phones started ringing Sunday night after the Chiefs won. So far, they’ve booked four trips for fans going to the Super Bowl, and 8 to 10 are on the sidelines, ready to get in the game.
“Probably anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500 round trip is what we’re seeing right now,” he said. “If you’re willing to make a connection, it’s less.
Ebbitts said all-in airfare and travel for two nights in Vegas will cost about $3,000.
“There are so many hotel rooms there,” he added.
He said the prices are still elevated, but there are some good values.
“For instance, a five-star Bellagio Hotel is around $1,400 a night. Something that’s still on the strip, for instance, the Luxor, I think it’s going for around $450 or $500,” Ebbitts said.
You might remember people paid $3,000 a night for hotels when the Chiefs played in Phoenix.
“So yeah, these are much better priced,” he said.
What’s going to cost you a pretty penny are the game tickets going for $7,000 to $40,000 a pop. He expects game ticket prices to drop later this week.
“Let’s book the hotels and airfare and then let you search better value on the tickets as we get a little bit closer in,” he added.
Ebbitts found airlines having fun with flight numbers.
“Here’s Taylors flight, 1989, American, from Kansas City, it leaves at 12:30 and arrives at 1:30,” Ebbitts said.
There’s also flight number 87 for Travis Kelce and 15 for Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs are also offering big game fan packages for thousands of dollars. Some include tickets to the game, hotel and airfare.
