Haysville man sentenced for death of Derby woman

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Friday morning, a judge sentenced Leroy Vandegrift for a crash that killed a Derby woman in 2021.

Investigators said Vandegrift was involved in two crashes early in the afternoon of Oct. 18, 2021. The first crash was a hit-and-run. The sheriff’s office said Vandegrift’s pickup rear-ended a car. The person in the car was not hurt.

According to the sheriff’s office, Vandegrift sped away but lost control and hit 26-year-old Anastasia Rooney’s vehicle head-on at 63rd and Broadway. Rooney died at the scene.

Vandegrift had serious injuries and was not arrested until June 2022.

In January, he pleaded guilty to:

Involuntary manslaughter, a severity level five-person felony

Driving under the influence, a Class B misdemeanor

Leaving the scene of an accident, a Class C misdemeanor

The judge sentenced Vandegrift to more than three years behind bars:

34 months in prison, followed by

Six months in the county jail
