WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — One K9 unit is headed to retirement after his handler accepted a position with a new department.
The K9 Odie page said on Facebook that Odie’s handler, Colt, requested Odie to be able to retire, and the North Newton Police Department allowed the request.
Odie spent five and a half years with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office before moving to the North Newton Police Department two years ago.
K9 Odie will be 11 in 2024, and Colt wanted him to have as normal a dog life as he could.
“As you can imagine, we are extremely happy for Odie, but it will be a big change for Colt not to have Odie with him while at work,” the Facebook post reads.

K9 Odie, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit that works to raise money for the K9s and other law enforcement needs around the area. The Facebook post says they intend to continue their work after Odie’s retirement.
“We can’t tell you enough how thankful we are for your continued support over the years,” concluded the post.
