Gage Park carousel could get makeover soon

12 April 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Shawnee County is asking for the community’s opinion for possible changes its carousel at Gage Park this week.

Shawnee County Commissioners are giving the go-ahead to work on designs to improve the carousel. On the morning of April 11, the commissioners agreed that work should start on designs to improve the carousel building.

Some ideas presented during the commissioner’s meeting Thursday could make the carousel more accessible and enjoyable to visitors on a year-round basis. One idea would be to add the former Gage Park mini-train to the building as part of a new museum space.

“The thought being that we’d be able to operate the carousel year-round which we don’t currently do,” said Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Director Tim Laurent. “It would be temperature-controlled; it would add a concession area. We’ve talked for many years about creating a sort of museum space.”
