Former Clay County undersheriff arrested, suspected of striking inmate

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it has arrested a former Kansas undersheriff.

The former undersheriff was arrested after he turned himself in at the Clay County Jail in Clay Center. The KBI said he was arrested on suspicion of mistreatment of a confined person.


Standoff ends at QuikTrip in south Wichita

The KBI began an investigation on Oct. 4, 2023, at the request of the Clay County Sheriff when he discovered evidence of an incident on Sept. 29 at the Clay County Jail. During the incident, it is believed the former undersheriff unlawfully struck an inmate.

Shortly after, the former undersheriff’s employment was terminated.

An investigation is ongoing.

KSN does not name suspects until they are formally charged with a crime.
