Fishing will be closed at Lake Shawnee in February, here’s why

5 February 2024

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local officials are set to stock Lake Shawnee with another round of trout later this month.

Cory Hollar with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation (SCP+R) said in a press release that the spring stocking of trout at Lake Shawnee will take place on Friday, Feb. 23. The lake will be closed to fishing activities from Feb. 21-28. The lake will be open for fishing again at 6 a.m. on Feb. 29.

In total, 7,000 pounds of rainbow trout will be dumped into the lake at 1 p.m. on Feb. 23 at the main boat ramp at the lake. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will be assisting with the trout stocking.

Hollar said trout season is open till March 31, 2024. To go fishing for trout in Kansas, you must have a valid fishing license and a $14.50 trout permit. These can be purchased at most locations where fishing licenses are sold or online.
