BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Fire crews tried but could not save a building from a fire early Thursday morning in Barton County.

Sheriff Brian Bellendir said a structure fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Southeast 80th Avenue. It’s a rural area several miles southeast of Great Bend.

Deputies and fire crews rushed to the scene and found a large workshop engulfed in flames.

According to Bellendir, four people were in the shop. He said someone was welding, and sparks or slag ignited the insulation in the wall. The blaze spread quickly, and the four people could not put it out.
