False report leads to dog shot by police in Manhattan

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – A dog was shot after reports were made to police it had bitten a child and was exhibiting aggressive behavior in Manhattan on Monday.

At 4 a.m. on March 18, officers with the Riley County Police Department (RCPD) responded to a report of an aggressive dog that had bitten a child. When officers arrived, they found the dog acting aggressively towards an officer, according to a press release from the RCPD.

An RCPD officer shot the dog, injuring it. Local animal control staff attended to the animal and took it to Kansas State University Veterinary Services for treatment, according to the press release.

A follow-up investigation found the person who made the report was under the influence and the alleged dog bite incident had happened a year prior. The child was later confirmed to be safe inside a home.

“We are pleased to report that the dog is currently receiving medical care and is expected to recover from its injuries,” the RCPD said in the press release. “This incident was part of a domestic violence situation. As such, we are refraining from disclosing further details at this time. We assure the public that we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including our valued animal companions.”
