Fake cash pushes police to issue warning in Manhattan

7 March 2024

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – The spread of fake cash in a Kansas community has ties to a more widespread national issue.

27 News spoke with the Riley County Police Department (RCPD) about a recent spike in reports of counterfeit bills being used in the Manhattan area. The department took to social media in February to warn people to avoid getting fooled by the fake currency.

RCPD spokeswoman Ashley Tokoi said there have been seven reports of counterfeit cash since Feb. 24, 2024 at local businesses like Sonic, Vista Burger, Dollar Tree and Walmart. In each case, the bills being used are in $50 and $100 amounts.

“Counterfeit bills pose a significant threat to the community as they undermine the integrity of our currency system and can lead to financial losses for businesses and individuals,” Tokoi said. “When counterfeit bills circulate, businesses may suffer losses when they unknowingly accept fake currency, and this can have a ripple effect on the economy. Additionally, the presence of counterfeit bills can erode trust in the local economy and lead to increased scrutiny and inconvenience for legitimate transactions.”

Locals who think they’ve found fake cash are encouraged to reach out to the RCPD. Some tips Tokoi has for spotting a false bill include the following:

Check for security features such as watermarks, security threads and color-shifting ink.

Feel the texture of the paper as real currency usually is printed on a specific type of paper with a distinct feel.

Examine the printing quality and details of the bill such as fine lines, portraits and text.

Use a counterfeit detection pen that reacts differently to genuine currency versus counterfeits.

Compare the bill with a known genuine bill or use a counterfeit detection device if available.

“It is essential not to confront individuals suspected of producing or using counterfeit bills,” Tokoi said. “Instead, individuals should promptly report any suspicious activity or encounters involving counterfeit currency to law enforcement for investigation.”

Counterfeit investigations are handled at the national level by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS). You can make reports of counterfeit cash on the USSS website by clicking here. Tokoi said the current counterfeit issues being experienced in the Manhattan area have not risen to the level of getting the USSS involved yet.
