Extra security at Maize schools due to unsubstantiated threat

29 February 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An email to parents and employees by Maize USD 266 says the district is putting extra security measures following an unsubstantiated threat.

The school district said Thursday and Friday, students will be screened by the Opengate weapons detection system before entering Maize High School and the Maize Career Academy.

Wichita Public Schools is allowing Maize to borrow their Opengate system to help reduce the screening time for students.

Students will need to have laptops and three-ring binders out of their bags and backpacks for screening. Maize said it expects to see minor delays, so tardies will be excused.

Absences at any Maize USD 266 school will be excused on Thursday and Friday if parents prefer that their children not attend school.

District and school administrators are working closely with law enforcement officials, including school resource officers, on the ongoing investigation. Additional police and administrative supervision and support will be provided.
