HAYS, KS. (KSNT) – Emporia State basketball dropped two road matchups out west on I70 this afternoon against Fort Hays State.

The men lost a close game 67-62, while the women fell 72-63 against the ranked Tigers.

Men’s recap:

Fort Hays started the game hot, up 11-2, but the Hornets were able to get the game to 19-18 midway through the first half. Kaden Evans made a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the frame to give Emporia State a 36-35 lead at the break.

The game went back-and-forth, but a 10-4 run from the Tigers to end the game was too much to overcome, as Emporia State dropped the contest 67-62.

Alijah Comithier paced the Hornets with 21 points. Atavian Butler and Owen Long each added 12.

Women’s recap:

Emporia State women’s basketball began its road matchup against ranked Fort Hays State about as well as it could have imagined. Through a quarter of play, the Hornets led 21-11.

In the second quarter, the Tigers started to show why they’re selected atop the MIAA conference, as Emporia State’s lead turned into a 31-27 deficit at halftime.

The Hornets were able to keep it within three points late in the game, but free throws sent it over the top as Emporia State dropped the game 72-63.

Faith Paramore and Gracie Gilpin both scored 18 points, Queen Ulabo added 15.

Next up for both teams is a road trip to Northeastern State for a doubleheader on Feb. 1.
