Emporia Municipal Airport receives grant for expansion

9 March 2024

EMPORIA (KSNT)- Earlier this week, Emporia found out its municipal airport will receive a nearly $1 million grant from the Kansas Airport Improvement Program.

The airport will use the money to expand the apron, which is where planes park to board passengers and refuel. One city leader says this will resolve their current spacing problem.

“It will allow space for smaller planes to get to the self serve fuel station which currently when we have a larger plane on the apron it is very difficult to get the planes in to the self serve fuel station,” Dean Grant, Director of Emporia Public Works said.

The state will not allocate funds for this project until the start of the fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2024. Once funds are allocated, designs will begin for this project.
