Dozens of animals found ‘living in hazardous conditions’ at Topeka home

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — Two people were arrested after 73 animals were removed from a home in central Topeka on Tuesday, and another 18 died, according to the Topeka Police Department.

It happened after the TPD executed a search warrant in the 1400 block of SW Fillmore St. A TPD captain described the conditions at the central Topeka house where the pets were seized.

“The conditions these animals were living in ranks as one of the worst I’ve ever seen in my career,” said Capt. Colleen Stuart. “I am extremely proud of our animal control unit, and we are grateful to have the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) partner in this terrible situation. The HSUS was able to provide the needed resources to allow these animals a second chance for a loving forever home.”

Kirsten Peek with HSUS said in a separate press release that multiple Great Dane-type dogs and cats were discovered living in filthy conditions. Many of the dogs are severely underweight, with some animals appearing to suffer from eye, skin, and upper respiratory issues. The animals found were distributed by the HSUS and animal care organizations.

“Nothing can prepare you to see animals suffering in such terrible conditions,” said Midge Grinstead, Kansas director for HSUS. “We are grateful to the Topeka Police Department and all the agencies working together to get these animals the help they need.”

Two people are facing animal cruelty charges.
