KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City police say a dispute between several people led to the deadly shooting Wednesday at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally.
At the conclusion of the rally, there were shots fired west of Union Station near the parking garage, and several people were hit.
Three suspects were taken into custody; two of them are juveniles.
Police Chief Stacey Graves stressed a preliminary investigation shows no connection to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism.
No charges have been filed at this time.
Graves thanked the brave first responders, as well as many Chiefs fans, who helped stop a potential suspect after the shooting.
“Those in attendance also responded. They helped one another and even physically stopped a person who was believed to be involved in the incident,” Graves said. “I want to thank the people who acted bravely yesterday … your selfless act did not go unnoticed.”
Graves also confirmed Thursday that 43-year-old Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan was killed in the shooting. She was a DJ and host of Taste of Tejano at local radio station KKFI.
“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family,” the station wrote on Facebook.
“This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”
Graves updated Thursday that 23 people were injured in the shooting, a slight increase from Wednesday’s injury total.
The victims ranged in age from 8 to 47, and over half of them were under the age of 16, police said.
On Wednesday, Children’s Mercy said it had 12 patients, and 11 were children. Nine of those patients had gunshot wounds. All of them are expected to recover, and all but three have since been released. FOX4 expects to hear more from Children’s Mercy leaders at 2 p.m. Thursday.
University Health said it had eight gunshot patients. Two are still in critical condition, and one is stable. Five others have been released from the hospital already. The hospital also had four patients with non-gunshot injuries.
As of Wednesday, St. Luke’s said it had one critical patient and three walk-in patients with minor injuries, not gunshot related.
