Derby native tabbed to lead national champion Michigan

27 January 2024

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Just two days after Jim Harbaugh bolted from Ann Arbor to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, the Michigan Wolverines have tabbed offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to take the reins.

A native of Derby, Moore has been the offensive coordinator for the Wolverines since January 2018. Wen Harbaugh was suspended amid a sign-stealing scandal in 2023, Moore took the reins as the acting head coach and led Michigan to a 4-0 record with signature wins over Penn State and rival Ohio State.

Moore was born in Derby and played for Derby High School under Tom Young. After graduation, he spent two seasons at Butler Community College as an offensive lineman before transferring to the University of Oklahoma as a four-star recruit in the class of 2006.

After his time at Oklahoma, Moore was a graduate assistant a Louisville until joining Central Michigan and Chippewas head coach Dan Enos. He was there until 2018, when he left for Michigan.

Under Moore’s leadership as offensive coordinator, his offensive line won the Joe Moore Award — awarded the country’s best offensive line unit — in both 2021 and 2022. It was the first time any school had won the award back-to-back.

Last season, the Michigan Wolverines stormed to the College Football Playoff with a perfect 13-0 record, where they handled Alabama 27-20 in overtime in the semifinal and Washington 30-13 in the National Championship.
