‘Corndog’ by another name comes through for winning Super Bowl play

12 February 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl champions and pulled out an old trick with a new name to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Patrick Mahomes hit Mecole Hardman for a three-yard walk-off touchdown, and the play should feel really familiar to Chiefs Kingdom..

Mahomes said the Chiefs used the play in last year’s Super Bowl as well, called “Corndog,” early in the 4th quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles on a Mahomes five-yard TD pass to Kadarius Toney to give the Chiefs a 28-27 lead.

The play consists of a receiver acting as if they’re going in motion, like they’re running a jet sweep, then swiftly cutting back to the outside. The play is most effective when you have speedy receiver such as Hardman and Toney, which is why it worked to perfection.

“The call is different, but it’s like the same exact motion as Corndog,” Mahomes told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson immediately after the win. “And we brought it back at the right time. Coach [Andy] Reid, he’s a legend, man; he’ll do that.

“And Mecole Hardman man, battling through adversity this year… in that moment and making that play, that’s special.”

Hardman told WDAF’s John Holt and Rob Collins the two-option play was called “Tom and Jerry” in the huddle on Sunday night. The wide receiver also said he blacked out during the game-winning play but knew the Chiefs were champs when he came to and saw Mahomes.

Mahomes finished 34-46 with 333 yards and two touchdowns, winning his third Super Bowl MVP and is certainly in the conversation for the greatest QB of all-time.

Reid’s creativity also continues to prove he is one of the best coaches and offensive minds in league history.

And for Hardman, it certainly is redemption as he started the season with the New York Jets, where he didn’t see much playing time, and the receiving core was under much criticism for a majority of the season.

He turned things around and made two huge plays in the Super Bowl and led all receivers with three receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown while making one of the biggest plays in franchise history.

The win not only gives the Chiefs three Super Bowls in five years, but stamps these as one of the very few NFL dynasties.
