City seeking Hotel Topeka buyers, spending another $500,000

TOPEKA (KSNT) – District 8 Councilmember Spencer Duncan spoke about the most recent developments regarding Hotel Topeka on the KSNT Morning Show.

On Tuesday, the City of Topeka approved spending additional funds up to $500,000 to maintain Hotel Topeka. The council voted 7-3 to provide the additional funds. So far the city has invested around $9 million into the hotel since last year.

Duncan said the $500,000 will go towards maintenance and upkeep. Duncan specified that the city isn’t spending more money than it’s budgeted for.

“I know people are worried about those expenses but these are expenses we’ve prepared for so we’re not having to dip into other money, so to speak, to find those funds,” Duncan said.

Duncan said the city is moving forward to find a buyer for the hotel. He said the city has already received some offers and is looking at engaging with brokers.

“It’s kind of like any building or even your house, you kind of have to do a little bit here and a little bit there and you do the most important projects first to make sure in this case that people can use the facility, that events can be booked and that people are satisfied with their experience when they stay at that hotel,” Duncan said.
