Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII in overtime thriller

12 February 2024

LAS VEGAS (KSNT) – The Kansas City Chiefs are taking home the Lombardi trophy for the second straight year after beating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

The Chiefs’ defense came up big on the first drive of the game, forcing a 49ers fumble. However, neither offense followed suit. A series of punts rounded out the first quarter, before San Francisco’s Jake Moody put the first points on the board with a second-quarter field goal.

San Francisco took advantage of a Kansas City turnover and slow offensive start, scoring another touchdown late in the second. Harrison Butker kept the Chiefs from getting shut out in the first half, drilling a 28-yard kick to enter halftime down 10-3.

Kansas City’s offensive struggles rolled over into the second half, with a Patrick Mahomes interception right out of the gate. However, Butker prevailed again a few possessions later, cutting the 49er lead to 10-6.

The Chiefs caught another break, recovering a San Francisco muffed punt. They wasted no time in getting first lead of the game with a Marques Valdes-Scantling touchdown on the next play, going up 13-10 late in the third.

When the 49ers made it into the end zone again, the Chiefs blocked the extra point, making it just a 16-13 game. Both teams traded field goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Butker nailed 29-yard field goal with three seconds on the clock to ties things up at 19 and send it to overtime.

In overtime, the 49ers took the ball first. After driving all the way to the red zone, the Chiefs defense forced its opponent to kick a field goal, making the game 22-19 in favor of San Francisco.

Then, on a pass from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs scored a touchdown to win the game 25-22 at the very end of the overtime period.
