KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The reigning Super Bowl Champions are reportedly making a money-saving decision by releasing one of their wide receivers.
The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to NFL.com.
The team parting ways with Valdes-Scantling should help with cost savings in hopes of re-signing impending free agents Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed.
Valdes-Scantling was headed for the final season of his three-year deal with the Chiefs, and his release will provide $12 million in cap savings for the Chiefs.
In his two seasons with the Chiefs, Valdes-Scantling had 63 receptions for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns. He was also a part of the teams that won back-to-back Super Bowls.
He came up with crucial catches in the Chiefs’ last two playoff runs, including a go-ahead touchdown in the 2022 AFC Championship, the game-clinching catch in the 2023 AFC Championship, and a touchdown catch immediately after a turnover in Super Bowl 58 to give Kansas City a lead over the San Francisco 49ers.
Before Valdes-Scantling joined the Kansas City Chiefs, he was a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.
