KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) — The Kansas City Chiefs will have to replace a key front office executive this offseason.
Vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis has taken virtually the same position as executive VP of football operations of the Carolina Panthers.
Tilis spent 14 years with Kansas City, where he started as a salary cap/contract analyst and worked his way up to his current position. He was the lead negotiator for all contract extensions and free agent deals, including leading the way on quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ $500 million contract.
Tilis likely led the negotiations with defensive tackle Chris Jones during his contract holdout as well.
He also interviewed with the Panthers after the 2020 season for the open GM position.
The University of Rochester grad worked with general manager Brett Veach on KC’s football operations, including salary cap management, roster strategy and optimal use of club resources.
And Tilis isn’t the only front office exec receiving some looks.
Assistant GM Mike Borgonzi reportedly interviewed with the Washington Commanders for their open GM position, but they have since filled that role.
The Chiefs also had former executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles take a GM position with the Chicago Bears in 2022.
The Commanders are the only team without a head coach, and most new coaching staffs and front offices have filled all their positions so this may be one of the few execs that the Chiefs lost this offseason.
