Art That Touches Your Heart empowering Black artists

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Sculptures and paintings share a story with a simple glance.

“Art speaks to you without words, and you can catch an idea just by looking,” said Janice Thacker.

It’s an experience that energizes the retired teacher and artist.

“When you see a lot of art you say, ‘Oof, what am I wasting my time?’ You’ll get up. It will wake you up at 3 a.m. to do your art,” she said.

Thacker decided to give a local platform for Black creatives.

“Why can’t we have this in Wichita? Why do we have to be left out just because we are in the middle of the country,” she asked herself.

She founded “Art That Touches Your Heart.” The nonprofit brings professional Black artists and their work to shows in Wichita.

“We’ve paid to take care of their rooms. So they’ll be here for one night, and (we cover) their gas, so we help them get here. But then they’ve had good sales, so now they’re coming back,” she said.

The nonprofit invites students to connect with established artists.

“You can ask them what inspired you. How long have you been doing this, and what do you want people to get from your art?” Thacker explained.

A step in sketching their future.

“How do you get any better than to see people better? That’s how you grow,” she said.

Current artists are clearing the lane for the next era of creatives to drive.

You can see student art in the annual Art That Touches Your Heart Gallery through the end of the month. It’s free to view at Wichita State’s Rhatigan Center.
