TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Zoo wants the community to collect clothes equal to the weight of Tembo, the Zoo’s African elephant.
This year the Topeka Zoo is collecting gently used clothing and shoes for Earth Day on April 20th. The clothing drive is part of the zoo’s Strategic Plan on Sustainability.
Clothes will go to aiding agencies who contribute to the area’s community.
“The zoo is also passionate about wanting to help Topeka and surrounding communities by combining a clothing drive with reducing the number of textiles traveling to land fill space, and reusing items that can provide for a need in our community,” a zoo spokesman said.
To participate, bring gently used clothes and shoes to the south entry gate at the zoo on April 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry to the zoo won’t be necessary to make donations. Undergarments won’t be collected during the drive.
“We’ve been wanting to make Party for the Planet, our Earth Day celebration, an even bigger and better version of itself,” said Dennis Dinwiddie, Director of Conservation and Education at the Topeka Zoo. This effort, spearheaded by Dalton, one of our animal care staff, involves the community in making a difference for our community while also making an environmental impact.
