10-year-old shot while in car in south Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 10-year-old boy was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after he was allegedly shot by his mother in south Wichita.

A news release from the Wichita Police Department says shortly before midnight on Wednesday; officers were dispatched to the intersection of Hydraulic Avenue and Industrial Street for a reported shooting.

The call was made by the 10-year-old, who told dispatchers he had been shot.

Less than a minute later, a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Impala heading north on Interstate 135 and Kansas Highway 15 and found a mother and her son in the vehicle. The boy was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg.

The deputy called for assistance from WPD and Sedgwick County EMS. The boy was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement searched the vehicle and found a loaded firearm under the front driver’s seat. The mother was taken to police headquarters for further questioning, and detectives from the Exploited and Missing Child Unit went to the hospital to interview the boy.

The mother was later booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery; reckless deadly weapon cause great bodily harm, and aggravated endangering a child.

KSN does not name suspects until they have been officially charged.
